Most protesters want people to stop giving money to companies that help Israel and the fighting in Gaza.
On Wednesday at UCLA, people were told to leave by the speakers, but most of them stayed and kept shouting support for Palestine.
UCLA said that on Thursday and Friday, they will have limited activities on campus and all classes will have to be taught online.
The leader of California was upset that the police took too long to come to a fight at UCLA. The fight was between a group that supports Israel and a group that supports Palestine. The Israel supporters attacked the Palestine supporters while wearing masks before the police arrived.
Governor Gavin Newsom’s helper said it was not okay that the police took too long to help.
The police in New York City had to ask some people who were supporting Palestine to leave Columbia University.
Government and school leaders say that security guards were sent to the pro-Palestinian camp on Dickson Plaza quickly after fights started on Tuesday night. Some people who saw it happen say that the guards took a little while to get there, and there was no intervention for a short time at night.
Trump said that campus protests are similar to the riots that happened on January 6th, while Biden is working to stop fighting in Gaza to avoid criticism.
The police just stayed at the edge of the grass and wouldn’t move, even when we asked them for help, said UC Divest at LA, a group that was part of the camp.
People who were upset about something started to go home two hours after it happened, and the police were able to take charge on Wednesday (May 1).
Governor Newsom said that it’s not okay to be violent or break the law when you are using your right to free speech.
He said the people who did something wrong should be punished, like getting in trouble with the law or being kicked out of school. According to the Los Angeles Times, there were only a few police officers at UCLA and they left because there were too many people in the crowd.
The police needed extra help from other places like the California Highway Patrol and Los Angeles to get things back to normal. It took three hours to make everything safe again.
Columbia University has temporarily stopped some students who were protesting.
A big fight happened at a famous school in the US late at night, right after the police made students leave a building they were protesting in at another school in New York.
The protests at Columbia about the fighting in Gaza have led to similar protests at other schools in the US.
People are protesting at many different schools, including big and small ones, that receive money from Israel and companies involved in the war. The protests have spread to over 25 states.
The university people said they had a lot of security in the area, but didn’t want to stop the mostly calm protests. Then, a big group of people supporting Israel came to campus in black clothes and masks and tried to take down the barriers.
The people wearing masks hit the campers with sticks and bats, sprayed them with a stinky spray, and ripped their signs and boards.
College leaders are feeling more and more pressure to stop protests supporting Palestine because they are happening in more and more places around the country.
People who support Palestine went to Columbia University and caused some problems. The mayor of New York City said that some of the people who were arrested were not from the university, but came from outside to cause trouble.
